Bar Snacks at Oddseoul

by Patricia

Is Oddseoul “Asian fusion” or does it qualify as Asians-hipster? Leo and I suspect the latter but frankly, we’re just relieved they’ve resisted the urge to add fried chicken to the menu just to name the place Seoul Food, right? (Get it?!) ANYWAY…I’m the incorrigible glutton who ate there twice in one week. The first time was on a Monday with Amy and Angie on a catch up date, then Friday with Leo.

The menu is divided into small plates and ssäm platters, but you’re better off ordering the small plates. My favourites?

Tempura Prawns. If you’re going to do a rift on a popular Japanese snack, that is the way to go. How do they get the batter that thick and crispy? What’s in that orange mayo? Should crustaceans be that meaty? Seriously. Get it. There’s also the Squash Poutine. Cheese curds, curry, mayo, scallions, toasted sesame seeds, and pickled ginger all come together wonderfully.

Also eaten: OS Wings, Bulgogi Cheesesteak, Avocado & Scallion Salad, Pork Bun, The Loosey (burger on sandwich bread), and the short rib ssäm and Kimchi Fried Rice.

Field Trip Music + Arts Festival 2013

by Patricia

Barely two weeks into June and the Toronto music festival season has begun with possibly the funnest event of the summer. Over the weekend Arts & Crafts celebrated their 10th anniversary with a label’s worth of homegrown indie nostalgia, which included Broken Social Scene, Feist, Stars, and Zeus, paired with an equally superb line up of food vendors handpicked by the bands and Hassel Aviles of Toronto Underground Market (TUM). There was a lovely photography exhibition, a hula hoop field and pop-ups from folks of Etsy and the Drake General Store. Which, altogether made for some good times at Fort York National Historic Site & Garrison Common. The only complaint was that cans of limited edition “Field Tr-IPA” from Amsterdam Brewing Co. sold out way too early!

Eaten: Stout ice-cream sandwich from Sweet Sammies Ice Cream Sandwich Co.; Traditional Aussie + Butter Chicken meat pies from Meat Pies Mates; Voltron + Carnita tacos from La Carnita, mini cupcakes from Bite Me Bakery, and much more.

Toronto Doughnuts: Mini Doughnuts at Little Nicky’s Coffee

by Leo

Our Homer’s Odyssey into Toronto’s doughnuts continues…

- O -

Do you remember the first time you had Tiny Tom Donuts? I can, it was at CNE and while I haven’t actually been to the Ex in years, there will always be a fairly substantial part of my heart devoted to baby doughnuts that come into the world via conveyor belt. So, imagine my delight when Little Nicky’s set up shop back in 2010 and we all started enjoying their mini doughnuts made bar-top for all to see (and smell). The best seat in the house actually faces the “donut robot” that sends piping hot doughnuts tumbling towards you straight out of the fryer. They’re made to order, tossed in cinnamon sugar and served hot. True to form, Little Nicky’s has bucked the trend of specialty doughnut shops that constantly experiment with new/innovative flavours because sometimes all you want is something simple and perfect to dip in your coffee. If only they had endless batter and longer hours (till 6pm daily and closed Sundays), I might sit by the fryer and fade away like Degas’ absinthe lady. Mini doughnuts are $2.75 for six, $4 for a dozen.

Some photos on Fujifilm Pro 160S

by Patricia

I picked up a roll of expired Fuji 160S at the Lomography store about two months ago and finally got it developed! Because it was still winter and I shoot indoors a lot (i.e. eat indoors a lot), I ended up taking those photos at wide open at f1.8 on my 50mm. They’re all a bit soft focused…but I don’t mind the creamy bokeh it yielded though.

Instagrammies: Black & White

by Patricia

First of all, how good is Justin Timberlake’s Suit & Tie? The black and white (or more like black and grey) video is fantastic.

Anyway...let me show you a few things from my past week:

BW_INSTA

1. Patio season is almost upon us. The Black Bull hasn’t wasted any time.
2. Starbucks interiors are getting more hip by the day. Yes, it’s a giant metal S hanging on exposed brick walls.
3. The white eames chairs at RSquared Cafe are very chic.
4. Just a bit of fun with Leo and friend outside of North of Brooklyn Pizzeria. Again.
