What’s the best thing to do during a San Francisco heat wave? Reward your sweaty self with a 50 Shades of Beige ice-cream feast at Bi-Rite Creamery and Humphry Slocombe, two of the best artisan ice-cream makers in the city. Sure, our selections look tame in comparison to the more colourful choices available (ahem, Jesus Juice Sorbet), but the flavours were intense and vivid.

Brown Sugar with Ginger Caramel Swirl
Tooth aching, saccharine, but loved the strong ginger flavour.

Toasted Coconut
Can’t go wrong with coconut.

Blue Bottle Vietnamese Ice Coffee
Vietnamese coffee is pretty good on its own, but put it in churned cream with beans sourced from Blue Bottle? The best coffee flavoured ice-cream you’ll have.

Brown Butter
Beurre noisette has never tasted so good. Mmm, butter.

The Secret Breakfast
An ode to that special kind of alcoholism. There’s enough bourbon to make this scoop all melty with crunch and texture coming from the bits of  corn flakes throughout.
